Home Reading Folder:
Inside this folder you will find a HOME READING RECORD SHEET. You will need to sign the sheet and fill out the date your child read the book. Also, please let me know if you have any comments about how the reading went. This folder needs to come back to school at least two times per week. Every time your child brings back their folder they get a new book.
When you are reading with your kids try this:
1) on your 1st read, you read the book. Point to the words and talk about the pictures.
2) on your 2nd read, let your child read the book, and help them out when they need it.
3) on your 3rd reading, your child should be able to read the book without any mistakes.
By the third reading, your child should be able to point to and read all of the words in the book. If they can't, please have them re-read the book.

Accelerated Reader Books (AR):
If your child has finished all of the books in the Home Reading Tubs, they move on to the AR reading program. Students get to check out books from the library that have a dot on them indicating their reading level. The picture shows what color of dot indicates an approximate reading level. After they have read the book, they can bring them back to school and take a test on the book for comprehension. The tests range from 5 questions to 10 questions. Students who have read the books carefully should score a 70 percent or better.
Thursday Folders:
The Thursday Folder is for homework to come to and from school. There will also be any classwork that is sent home, and any other important information from the school. I encourage you to make a routine of sitting down with your child on Thursday evening and going though this folder with them. Have them explain the work that's coming home. Have them take out their homework and show you what they need to do. This is great practice for our portfolio shares that occur three times a year, it also places the responsibility of school work on your child. Taking ownership of their learning is a very big goal for our program.
Word Study (Spelling) Folders:
The spelling folder comes home every MONDAY. In the folder will be a 3x5 note card with a list of words and the date it was given. Please find a way to practice these words every day so that your child knows them all by memory. It also helps if you mix up the words as they practice so they memorize the word, and not the order of the words. Below are a few ways to practice:
1) have your child write each word 3 times each.
2) use the words in a sentence.
3) put the words in ABC order
4) build the words like this:
b
bu
bui
buil
build
5) log on to www.spellingcity.com, you can enter your word list and it will have a bunch of fun activities to do.
